2Loose Willy's Gasser Project, Installing The Radiator:

A new BeCool #80021 radiator and a pair of Spal fans need to be fitted in. This setup is rated for up to 600 ci and 1,000 hp, so I should be good with this! They were originally spec'd to go in the 6 cyl. position, but the blower setup pushed it way forward, so I will have to do a custom setup.

It also sits about an inch too high in this position, and hits the underside of the hood on the corners of the radiator and the radiator cap......

Sawzall made short work of the sheetmetal in front of the original radiator position, as it was in the way, it had to go........

I have about an inch and a half available that I can pocket the radiator into the frame before I interfere with the lower radiator hose. The Olds water pump inlet luckily faces to this side so a hose connection will be easy.......

The fan motors clear the blower belt ok. It is all close, and if I lose a blower belt, I may lose the fan motors, but I don't have any alternative really......

The plan is to fab a bottom support and cross member that I can pocket into the frame on each side 1.5". The radiator will be rubber mounted and sit in this support. The front supports of the cage will come down and be connected to the frame at this point, and will support the uprights on each side of the radiator. I think it will work out fine.

Got busy and fabbed a couple of pockets for the radiator, then cut openings in the frame for them:

Welded them in, and added some angle iron along the outside of the frame where the pockets are. Additional reinforcement will be added.

The radiator fits nicely, and it will now clear the under side of the hood. I had to reroute the radiator drain and increase the size of the right side pocket to accomodate it. You can see it here.

Plenty of room for the fans, it is close but will work just fine.

Later...... After building the cage, and extending the front cage legs through the firewall to the frame, I built the radiator mounts.

Painted the radiator and mounts flat black, will install the dual Spal fans behind the radiator on final assembly, there is enough room to do that....

Here's some pix showing the dimensions, it is 34-1/4" wide (including tanks, not including mounting brackets), by 16-1/2" high....

I pocketed/reinforced the frame rails around the tanks on each side of the radiator, it is full floating in those pockets. I made the right side pocket large enough to accomodate the drain line.....

Here you can see the radiator support, the bottom of the radiator is full floating in the frame pocket. I'm probably going to fit some firm foam rubber in that pocket around the radiator tank to give it some additional support.

More later......
